Flight to Houston

Houston is the largest city in Texas and the fourth largest city in the nation. Houston's leaders are also focusing their attention on making their city not only a great place to live, but a great place to visit as well. Houston has become a legendary travel destination that can be summed up in one word - more. As an urban vacation spot, we have more places to go, more people to see and more fun to be had than any other city in the south. Relaxing is easy, with great golf courses, beautiful parks, sumptuous spas, inspiring museums and spectacular shopping. And great family fun.

In mid-February, you'll be treated to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, the largest event of this kind in the world. The famed Bayou Bend Gardens are best viewed in the spring. In late April, the Houston International Festival spans 20 city blocks and includes over 1,800 performers from around the globe. If your visit isn't event-based, fall through spring is the best time to see Houston comfortably.

Houston has many world-class tourist attractions, including the Downtown Aquarium - containing an enormous half-million gallon complex, showcasing underwater life from around the world; Houston Zoo - home to an array of attractions and animals, including Natural Encounters, where visitors are able to get close to many of the animals; the Space Center - a premier tourist attraction, full of interactive displays and a host of information about space travel; Hermann Park - a huge park close to downtown, containing a landscaped Japanese Garden; Sam Houston Park - overlooking by towering skyscrapers and home to a particularly historic log cabin, tearooms and museum area; and the Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens - a 28-room mansion set in the River Oaks residential neighborhood.

If your family includes furry members, several Houston, Texas, hotels advertise as pet friendly in addition to being kid friendly. These family hotels offer pools, free breakfast, oversized family rooms and playgrounds. Houston vacations can include family activities such as a visit to the Houston Zoo or Byzantine Chapel Fresco Museum.

Houston is known as the Steelhead capital of the world because so many anglers flock here for the mighty fish - even though it is catch and release only. Anglers also come for spring and coho salmon, Dolly Varden, rainbow trout and other species, making Houston an angling hot spot. Fortunately, the many lakes and vast terrain make it so that no one place is too crowded.

The area surrounding Houston offers incredible summer activities such as swimming, canoeing and hiking. Visitors can also get the feel for the landscape on various circle tours, or while camping in the nearby wilderness.

Winter is also an active time in Houston. Snowmobiling and cross-country skiing are hugely popular here, and some downhill skiers venture into the backcountry, too.

Visitors to Houston have the choice of several accommodation options, from motels to lake lodges and cabins. Restaurants in town serve a variety of hearty food. And all necessary services such as banks, grocery stores, gas stations and even a new, comfortable leisure centre with a nice pool, are available.

Houston officially began as a tie-cutting centre for the Grand Trunk Railway, the rail line that now passes through downtown, almost parallel to Hwy 16. In the 1940s, however, forestry took over and still continues to be the dominant industry. The town has two massive wood processing plants just a few minutes drive west of town.
