Flight to Detroit

Known alternately as Motor City or Motown, Detroit has developed a reputation during it's history as a haven for automobiles and music. Home to many domestic car companies, Detroit's economy was built on the American desire for personal transportation, a desire that the Motor City was only too happy to deliver on. The city's automotive industry makes it the ideal place for the North American International Auto Show, an annual event held in January. Detroit was also the site of a modern musical renaissance in the 1960s when Hitsville USA produced artists such as Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye and others. The musical legacy continues with artists such as Eminem and the White Stripes hailing from the area. Detroit is linked to Windsor, Ontario, Canada by the Ambassador Bridge, making Detroit an important port of trade with Canada. Belle Isle Park is a noted attraction in Detroit, offering visitors a zoo, conservatory, aquarium and more.

In January, the average low temperature is 17 degrees Fahrenheit with 30 degrees being the average high. July averages range from 62 to 82. Detroit has more winter precipitation than other cities, with an annual average of 34 inches of snow and 28 inches of rain.

Hotel rooms can be surprisingly expensive in Detroit due to a rapid growth in business travel. Try to book well in advance to avoid prices of upwards of $100 for a moderate business classroom. Meals are more mainstream in price: Expect to pay around $20 for a nice dinner without wine and budget around $7-$10 for lunch money.

Detroit and its surrounding metropolitan area are fast becoming a great tourism destination, coming off an exciting 2006 Super Bowl event where the city shined. With the multitude of arts, culture, sports, and entertainment options available, it's easy to see why 19 million visitors come to downtown Detroit every year.

Detroit has a unique position within the Midwest tourism market as a center for gaming, sports, music, and other entertainment. Visitors have the opportunity to visit the gaming tables at Motor City Casino, Greektown Casino and MGM Casino, catch a Detroit Tigers baseball, Red Wings hockey, Pistons basketball, or Lions football game.

There are a wide variety of places to stay in Detroit, and the city has recently increased the number of downtown hotel rooms by 54% with the additional of the new Westin Book Cadillac Hotel, the Pick-Fort Shelby Hotel, and the three new 400-room casino hotels.

Detroit also contains many reliable cultural offerings, such as the African American History Museum - the world's largest African museum; the Children's Museum - a superb family museum containing a Planetarium; the Cranbrook Institute of Science - with numerous arts and science information; the Detroit Historical Museum - celebrating many interesting aspects of the city's rich history; the Greystone International Hall of Fame / Jazz Museum - showcasing Detroit's history and jazz legacy; the Motown Historical Museum - celebrating the heritage of Motown music; and the Detroit Institute of Arts - the fifth-largest museum in the USA, housing more than 65,000 artworks.
